About Us

The California Transit System Joint Powers Authority (CalTIP) is the result of cooperative efforts of public transit operators acting collectively to meet their insurance needs.

CalTIP was founded in 1987 by a small group of transit agencies looking for a better way to manage risk. What started as a liability program for 12 members has grown into a trusted, member-driven pool serving more than 30 public transit operators across California.

Today, CalTIP provides stable insurance coverage and practical safety support designed specifically for public transit. We exist to help our members operate with confidence, no matter what the market is doing.

Trusted. Accredited. Proven.

CalTIP meets rigorous industry standards for public entity risk pools, including:

CAJPA Accreditation

CalTIP met all of the stringent professional standards established by the California Association of Joint Powers Authorities (CAJPA) in the areas of governance, finance, claims control, safety and loss prevention, excess coverage, and risk management. CAJPA’s accreditation process requires reviews by independent consultants in various areas, including accounting, claims management, and actuarial analysis. CalTIP is proud to have received an “Accreditation with Excellence,” the highest designation possible from the California Association of Joint Powers Authorities.

AGRiP Accreditation

CalTIP has met all of the stringent requirements of the advisory standards program, including three levels of review, for accreditation by the Association of Governmental Risk Pools (AGRiP). The AGRiP recognition is a method for member pools to conduct a comprehensive self-assessment of internal operational procedures against industry best practices.
